Corporate History


Historically creation of the chemical giant in a small Ural town Gubakha owed the Second World War. At the very beginning of the war they brought the first equipment from the evacuated Stalynogorsk Nitrogen-fertilizer plant and after 1945 victory the separation German equipment came.

The official birth day of the Gubakhinskiy chemical plant is considered to be the 15th of November 1955 when the USSR Ministry of Chemical industry order on the acceptance of the first stage of the plant being constructed was signed.  

In 1957 the results for the application of the coke oven gas for the methanol synthesis were obtained by Gubakhinskiy Chemical Plant and it was firstly done in Soviet Union. 

After as little as two years the first in country-scale production plant of such type was put into operation in Gubakha. For USSR of the 60-s it did have the meaning: on the one hand, industrial plants of all republics got critical product, on the other hand, the economic level of the region was growing by leaps and bounds. 

During the period from the end of the 60-s to the beginning of the 70-s Gubakhinskiy Chemical Plant was resolutely building more and more new production units: they started to produce formalin, resins, paints, white zinc paint, alkali silicate and even a revolutionizing for that time being substitute for nonferrous metal - caprolon.

1971 was marked by the most important event of primarily ecologic meaning: methanol production was converted from coke oven gas to natural one. 

In 1977 the construction of the biggest in the world methanol production plants was initiated in Tomsk and Gubakha with the participation of British company Davy Powergas. 

The construction of new methanol production plants was finished in 1984. That year is the very beginning of the Contemporary history of Metafrax. 



June 30 - Gubakha chemical plant was firstly put into operation.
November 15 - official birth day when the toluene plant got the first product.


The plant for methanol production on the basis of coke oven gas was put into operation.


Methyl(ethyl)amine production plant was put into operation. These amines are fatty acids necessary for rocket fuel.


Formalin production plant was put into operation.


Caprolon production plant was put into operation.


Methanol production was changed from coke oven gas to natural gas that significantly raised the product quality, technical and economical parameters and general culture of production.


Urea formaldehyde resins production was launched.


The contract for construction of the biggest methanol plant in the world with the capacity of 750 thousand TPA with the British company "DavyMackee" was signed.


Start-up of hexamethylenetetramine production plant.


Start-up of pentaerythritol production plant.


Methanol plant М-750 was put into operation giving the chemical plant the second wind.


On the 6th of May Gubakha chemical works was reorganized into the industrial association "Methanol" by the order of the Minister of Mineral Fertilizers production of USSR.


On the 28th of January Metafrax trademark and logo were registered in the State trademarks register of USSR with Certificate No 93569.


On the 9th of July Gubakha industrial association "Methanol" was reorganized into joint stock company of open type Metafrax. Authorized capital of the company was 326 137 thousand rubles shared into the same quantity of stocks. 166 330 stocks (or 51 %) were sold out of the closed subscription to stock among the employees, 85 698 stocks (26,3 %) were sold on the special check auction, 8 882 stocks (2,7%) were sold via stock store.

There were signed contracts for methanol plant revamp and synthesis reactors upgrade. 

An agreement to build up waste treatment unit at pentaerythritol production plant along with the pure sodium formate production was concluded. 

The pilot batch of stabilized hexamine was produced.

Polyamide production plant: the production of 40,65 and 80 mm rods, inter rail gaskets for Sverdlovsk railroad was developed, the line to produce granulated polyamide of improved quality was put into operation and the automatic injection machine was mounted. 

In Severnyi settlement 4,5 blocs of apartment building, brewing facility and merry-go-rounds "Skazka" were built up and ready to be used. 


 Methanol synthesis reactors were upgraded.

Granulated polyamide production was mastered and a raw materials base to produce this kind of polyamide was set up, production of granulated polyamide articles on the automatic injection machine was approved. 


The overhaul of the Reformer Furnace and the upgrade of syngas compressor along with the increase of its capacity were performed.

The detailed engineering for sodium formate separation unit was carried out completely.

Stabilized hexamine production was developed and launched. The company became the first Russian enterprise to commercially produce the above mentioned grade. 

The process of resin KF-MT15 (КФ-МТ15) production was developed and launched on the basis of non-waste technology. The production of hypotoxic resin KF-P-E1 (КФ-П-Е1) was set up. 

The following finished products were put into production: a scratcher centering skid, grids for vacuum filters used in oil industry, insulation kits for Ministry of railroads. 


 A new urea formaldehyde resin grade used for urea treatment was mastered and put into operation. Treatment of ammonia-tar liquor that is waste from urea formaldehyde plant was set up.

The following items were elaborated and put into production: insulation articles for gas pipelines, polyamide rods with a diameter of 125mmм, grids for vacuum filters, ejection nozzles for the water cycle cooling towers. 

The color range of enamels were enlarged to 8, sanitary certificates were got for all the products. 


The organizational legal form changed and the enterprise became an Open Joint Stock Company Metafrax.

The agreement was drawn up with JSC Permgastexnologya and 2,6 km of pipes from the side of gas main was lined.

Some new resin grades were launched: Polycom ("Поликом"), Forkon-C ("Форкон - С"), KF-MM (КФ - ММ), KF-90 (КФ - 90).

Graphite-reinforced rods were put into production. The small articles of different geometric shapes production unit and centrifugal machine to produce pipes with a diameter of 1000 mm were put into operation. 


Putting into operation Metafrax steam boiler unit. The construction of the high pressure gas pipeline and deleting of the natural gas compressor from the process line at methanol production plant.

Seven-stored apartment building (28 apartments in total) and two cottages were ready to be used. 

A record output of product - 792 300 tones - was produced at the methanol production plant since its first commissioning. 


Start-up of the granulated polyamide production plant and the plant producing concentrated formalin with low methanol content.

Two cottages and eight-blocs-of-flats apartment building were ready to be used and the construction of 70-blocs-of-flats apartment building was initiated. 


The largest product output was got in formalin production plant. It was produced 231500 tones.

Granulated polyamide production plant was put into operation.

The equipment for the urea formaldehyde concentrate production plant arrived at JSC Metafrax site and civil and erection works were initiated.

Paint-and-lacquer materials production unit was shut-down.


Urea and formaldehyde concentrate production plant was put into operation (UFC-85). The capacity of the plant in terms of 37% formalin is 100 thousand TPA and in terms of 85% urea formaldehyde concentrate is 60 thousand TPA. A patented technology of Swedish company Perstorp Formox is used in production process. The contracts for the purchase of two similar urea formaldehyde concentrate production plants were drawn.

For the first time in Russia a full-scale implementation of a company resource management system was carried out on the basis of Oracle E-Business Suite R11i. This system made it possible to solve the problems of costs planning, control and management as well as the control for administration of the budget. 


The joint Russian-Finnish venture for synthetic resins production ZAO Metadynea was established. This first production site is situated on the territory of JSC Metafrax and its capacity is 180 000 tones of urea
formaldehyde resins per year.

The second urea formaldehyde plant with the capacity of 60 000 TPA was put into operation.

The Contract for purchase of concentrated formalin plant was signed with Austrian company Poerner.
The capacity of the plant is 270 000 tones of formalin per year.

The third urea formaldehyde concentrate plant (UFC-3) was put into operation. 

ZAO Metadynea industrial plant started its operation in a test run (the site is situated on the territory of JSC Metafrax) 

Civil and erection works were finished in pentaerythritol production plant.

The revamp of methanol production plant was finished and the capacity was brought to 1 mln TPA. 

New concentrated formalin production plant was put into operation. The capacity is 270 000 tones of 37-% formalin per year. There are similar plants neither in Russia, nor in Europe. 

Industrial resins production plant of the joint Russian-Finnish venture Metadynea was put into operation (established by JSC Metafrax and Dynea Chemicals) with the capacity of 30 000 TPA.

Three important contracts were drawn up for purchase of the following plants producing polyamide, hexamine and gaseous nitrogen. The total contract amount is more than 26 mln Euro. 

Tax accounting system along with Global-ERP applications integrated with Oracle eBusiness Suite was implemented. 


More than 30 million RUR were invested in railroad infrastructure expansion.

Construction work on the new polyamide plant is done, more than 290 million RUR were spent; about 70 million RUR were invested in hexamine plant reconstruction.

Work on the nitrogen gas plant with 27 million RUR invested is started.

Volumes of production were increased by 8%.

Installation of the new polyamide plant started.

On the 24th of September the company celebrated a double anniversary - 50 years from the start of a coke gas based methanol plant (M-110) and 25 years from the start of a present plant (M-750).

CJSC "Metadynea" started its new industrial resins plant for plywood production. Estimated capacity of the new reactor was 35 000 ton per year, and total production on the site in Gubakha reached 60 000 ton per year.  

On the 30th of May the start of a new polyamide plant took place. The new robotized plant combines Russian expertise along with Italian technologies of the 21st century.

On the 24th of December, for the first time, a million ton of methanol was produced during a year, which was a record-breaking result.

In October the hexamine plant was put into operation in state. The new state-of-art hexamine plant being commissioned, Metafrax became the biggest hexamine producer in Europe. The company's products received a high praise in the annual competition "100 Best Goods of Russia". A Silver prize of the competition was given for the production of UFC.

Specialists of Scientific and industrial bureau Specstrojsvyaz fit a new digital ATS of type Proton-CCC in IT development and communication division that made the communication more qualitative.


Corporate information system "Oracle E-Business Suite R12" with the entire production coverage and assets management was put into use. The development of Prognoz Platform-based Budgeting system was finished.

The main production plant produced the 20th million ton of methanol. Metafrax was included into the list of 100 best Russian companies of the Federal Registry of Russian Economy Base Organizations and Companies.

"Metafrax" received the status of electric energy wholesale market entity and the status authorized economic operator.


Metafrax acquires 100 % stake of Dynea Austria (Krems, Austria) producing formaldehyde and synthetic resins. So starting with November 2013 the Austrian assets of the company group was renamed to Metadynea Austria.

The production of the company became an award holder of 100 best goods of Russia awards. Company had the top place in nation-wide top-list of Russian companies having the core business activity as Production of other basic organic chemicals not included in other classification and earned the status of "Company of the year". The company was given a title "The best energy efficient organization in western Urals region".

The budgeting system of the company was granted as the winner of the 1st IT-project independent competition in Russian Federation.  The software solution developed by Prognoz company turned to be a leader in category "Business Applications: Finance".
2014 In order to bolster the position of the foreign affiliated company in European synthetic resins market the assets of Krems Chemie Chemical Services AG were acquired.

Metafrax celebrated the 60th anniversary.

The first stage of methanol production plant revamp was carried out to increase the capacity of the plant by 10 % (synthesis loop upgrade).

They started to erect the concentrated formalin plant (CF plant No 2). 44-appartment block of flats for the company’s employees entered into service in Gubakha, this work was funded by Metafrax.

134 railcars of new type arrived at Metafrax. They started to build up concentrated formalin production plant No 2 in Metadynea site in Moscow region and the similar formalin production plant with the capacity of 90 thousand tons of concentrated product per year was erected in Gubakha. 770 million rubles were spent to implement large-scale project. The company started to build up the Air/Nitrogen plant for internal company usage.

The dynamics of product sales became clearly positive: it was the first time when the commercial products were sold to the amount of 17 billion 423 million rubles that was 1 billion 150 million rubbles more in comparison with 2015. More than one third of the products made were exported.

The first stage of the water supply and sanitation system modernization was carried out. Single-section block of flats was built up and they started to build up two nine-store blocks of flats in Gubakha.

The Ammonia, Urea and Melamine production complex project (AUM) was launched: they prepared feasibility study of the project, construction site selection was investigated and, project environmental impact assessment study was made. The project passed through the international environmental and social impact that was prepared by D’Appolonia consultants (Italy). JSC NIIK elaborated the design documentation based on the Basic engineering project that was made up the licensor and copyright holder of all the three processes of the future production complex Casale SA, a Swiss company.  In June 2017 Glavgosexpertiza gave positive findings on the grounds of which the company obtained a production complex construction permit in September 2017.

In order to increase the methanol plant capacity to 3375 tpd PJSC Metafrax performed technical upgrade of Reformer Furnaces Unit No 2 as follows: a new section of partial oxidation of natural gas with oxygen was erected in desulphurization and conversion section. Air/nitrogen plant was put into operation.

The second stage of the water supply and sanitation system modernization was carried out. The first stage of the project for technical upgrade of railway tanks handling station was performed as well as the first stage of pure dipentaerythritol separation project was done under the technical upgrade program for pentaerythritol plant. The annual company development investment amount went beyond 10 billion rubles.

 Sustainable sales of micronized products – hexamine and pentaerythritol – were strengthened in Russian market and abroad.

The company signed the contracts with the general contractors who will build up the ammonia, urea and melamine production complex in Gubakha: the contracts were concluded with two Russian companies. They are: JSC NIIK "Research and design institute of urea and organic synthesis products" and LLC "Management Company "Uralenergostroy". The total contract amount is 33.5 billion rubles. All in all more than 950 million Euros will be invested into the new production complex. The chemical complex is expected to be started up in 2021. The developer of the technology and the supplier of the equipment is a Swiss company Casale SA. Under the Contract terms and conditions Casale SA is a licensor and EPCM-contractor.

All works connected with the preparation of the new production plant site were completed as well as the new integrated wastewater disposal system was designed. Starting with March 2018 they will start to erect the ammonia synthesis loop with the capacity of 894 tons per day, urea production plant with the capacity of 1672 tons per day and the melamine production plant with the capacity of 120 tons per day.
